The Beauty and Power of Essential Oils

Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. Throughout history, plants have been used for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits. As more and more people are opting for a greater sense of choice and responsibility for their emotional and physical health, the holistic approach of integrating essential oils into one's lifestyle is very much on the rise.

Speaking of 'essential' it is just that when choosing which oils to add to your lifestyle. The oils I will introduce you to on this page are from companies that are 100% pure such as doTERRA and Eden's Garden.

Essential Oils & Acupressure

As a certified Acupressurist, I find the use of particular oils to greatly enhance the experience of acupressure.* I often begin my sessions with a gentle face massage using a combination of sweet almond oil (for dilution), peppermint and lavender.

Oils can also be used on specific acupoints to aid physical symptoms (digestive imbalances, arthritis, joint-related or lower back pain, headaches, etc) as well as emotional needs (insomnia, anxiety, addictions, etc.)

yin yang
As an example, if you have a difficult time falling asleep at night, rubbing a drop of lavender on Kidney 1 (bottom of foot) about 30 minutes before retiring will draw the heat down from the upper body and thereby greatly assist in stopping 'monkey mind' and bringing calm (as well as easing headaches).

A blend known as 'Balance' when applied to feet, (again Kidney 1) or Heart 7 (at wrist crease on pinky side of hand) will lower anxiety, regulate mood swings and combat depression.

Peppermint can aid in calming a bout of sinusitis, dabbing a small amount on Large Intestine 20 (either side of the nostril - being careful to avoid eye area.) Mixing in a carrier oil such as coconut or sweet almond will also help if the peppermint is too strong. A drop of peppermint at the base of the neck can also be very helpful in relieving a headache. The cooling nature of the oil will help ease the tension as with any headache (whether frontal, occipital, migraine, etc) one of the key actions we can take is to bring cooling to the upper head and neck area and warmth to the feet. Placing your feet in a tub of warm water or massaging them and putting on warm socks will help bring the heat down from the upper body.

These are just a very few examples of how these two 'energies' can work in beautiful tandem with one another, each promoting the healing properties of the other.

I will be adding many more suggestions so please check back for updates.

*Always use caution regarding the dilution of oils. If you are very senstive or using on young children, rather than applying them 'neat' (no dilution) blend them with a carrier oil such as sesame, grapefruit seed, olive or coconut oil. Often times just inhaling the aroma of the oil while pressing the acupoint will also bring wonderful results.

Some suggestions for use of the oils to enhance balance in our chakras...

root chakra

OIL APPLICATION METHODS:

Topical (may be diluted with carrier oil such as coconut or grapeseed if you have sensitive skin.)

You will also receive the benefits of Cedarwood through diffusion or inhaling the aroma directly.

ACUPRESSURE POINT FOR
ROOT CHAKRA:

KIDNEY ONE (BUBBLING WELL):
(On sole of foot, between 2nd & 3rd toes,in depression formed when foot is flexed.) This is a very grounding point that also aids with insomnia problems, headaches and 'monkey mind' by drawing the heat down from the upper body. (Also a very effective point to use with any of the oils mentioned here.) Hold the point for 1 - 2 minutes while breathing deeply in and out through the nose.

kidney 1
sacral chakrasacral chakra OIL APPLICATION METHODS:
Topical: Can be applied neat or diluted 1:1 (1 drop essenital oil to one drop carrier oil) for those with sensitive skin.

You will also receive the benefits of Wild Orange through diffusion or inhaling the aroma directly.

SUGGESTED ACUPRESSURE POINT FOR
SACRAL CHAKRA:

KIDNEY 3 (SUPREME STREAM):
(In depression between ankle and achilles tendon, level with ankle bone)
Hold this point for 1-2 minutes to move Qi (energy) & blood, strengthen the kidneys thereby reducing levels of fear in the body and increasing our creative flow. Also supports the adrenals.

solar plexus

OIL APPLICATION METHODS:

Topical: Can be applied neat (with no dilution). As Grapefruit does not cause as much photosensitivity as other citrus oils, can be used even if one is going to be exposed to sun.

You will also receive the benefits of Grapefruit through diffusion or inhaling the aroma directly.

SUGGESTED ACUPRESSURE POINT FOR
SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA:

STOMACH 36 (LEG THREE MILE):
(Four finger widths below the kneecap, in the flesh outside the shin bone.) This point has more benefits than I can fit on this page... but here are a few. Massage the point briskly to bring benefit to the stomach and the spleen, increase vitality, strengthen digestive power and support the immune system. Brings us into personal power as it increases stamina and reduces worry.

OIL APPLICATION METHODS:

Topical: Can be applied neat (with no dilution) or diluted 1:1 (1 drop essential oil to one drop carrier oil) for those with sensitive skin.

You will also receive the benefits of Peppermint through diffusion or inhaling the aroma directly.

SUGGESTED ACUPRESSURE POINT FOR
HEART CHAKRA:

HEART SEVEN (SPIRIT GATE)
(At wrist joint, in depression just beyond crease in the wrist) The heart is the residence of the Spirit and this point opens that gateway. Very effective in bringing calm, relieving anxiety and helping reduce insomnia. May also clear heat that rises to the throat space causing congestion/obstruction in this area - aiding us in speaking our truth from the heart. Hold the point for 1 - 2 minutes while breathing deeply in and out through the nose.

You will also receive the benefits of Lavender through diffusion or inhaling the aroma directly.

SUGGESTED ACUPRESSURE POINT FOR
THROAT CHAKRA:

CONCEPTION VESSEL 22
(HEAVENLY PROMINENCE)

(In notch of the breastbone) This point benefits both the throat and the voice, bringing both physical as well as emotional balance. Hold the point for 1 - 2 minutes while breathing deeply in and out through the nose, using middle finger if comfortable for you.

THIRD EYE

OIL APPLICATION METHODS:

Topical: Can be applied neat (with no dilution) or diluted 1:1 (1 drop essential oil to one drop carrier oil) for those with sensitive skin.

You will also receive the benefits of Lemongrass through diffusion or inhaling the aroma directly.

SUGGESTED ACUPRESSURE POINT FOR
THIRD EYE CHAKRA:

YINTANG
(HALL OF IMPRESSION)

(In the midpoint between the eyebrows) This point pacifies the Spirit, relieves frontal headaches and is said to increase our ability to access our inner vision. Hold the point lightly for 1 - 2 minutes while breathing deeply in and out through the nose, using middle finger if comfortable for you.

YINTANG

CROWN CHAKRA

crown chakra

OIL APPLICATION METHODS:

Topical: This blend works best on the bottom of the feet. Put up to 6 drops on bottoms of feet. Also can be put on heart area, wrists, and solar plexus from neck to thymus.

Can also be diffused or the aroma inhaled directly.

This oil harmonizes the various physiological systems of the body, promoting tranquility and a sense of balance.

SUGGESTED ACUPRESSURE POINT FOR
CROWN CHAKRA:

GOVERNING VESSEL 20
(ONE HUNDRED MEETING POINT)

(In the center of the crown at the most 'Yang' point in the body) All meridians (energy channels) cross at the top of the head. This point connects with the pineal gland and brings balance to the crown chakra. It benefits the brain and calms the Spirit. Hold the point lightly for 1 - 2 minutes while breathing deeply in and out through the nose, using middle finger if comfortable for you.
